Ecuador started the FIFA Coral Cup on a winning note, beating hosts Qatar 2-0 in their Group-A match. This is Ecuador’s first win over Qatar after 26 years. Ecuador last beat Qatar in 1996, while they were defeated in 2018.
Ecuador now leads Group A with three point. The Netherlands will take on Senegal on Monday.
Qatar is the only host nation’s team to be defeated in the opening match. World Cup tournaments have been held every four years since 1930.
Captain Enner Valencia was the hero of Ecuador’s victory. He scored in the 16th and 31st minutes of the match as Ecuador defeated Qatar.
The game was played at the 60,000-seat capacity Al-Bayt Stadium on Sunday. The goals were scored by Ecuador’s Enner Valencia (16th and 31st minutes). Valencia scored in the third minute of the game, but the goal was cancelled after the use of the visual assistant referee [VAR] system, since he was offside.
